Implementing a Defect Tracking Tool: A process improvement war story
Robert Ferguson
CommWorks, a subsidiary of 3Com
CommWorks
already had a defect-tracking tool in 1999, but there were several reasons to
upgrade including web capability and multi-site development. Our journey is
only now completing after two years. We have learned several things along the
way. The talk will follow the history of the project, so you can see clearly
some of the risks, mistakes and solutions. At the end of the talk, you will be
able to see well-developed process models both for a tool implementation
process and for a defect tracking / change management process.
For
SEPG people, the implementation process itself will be interesting. For project
managers and developers, the defect management process, management of the
process and the metrics used to manage the process will be interesting.
Bob Ferguson is
Manager of the SEPG group at CommWorks, and ISO 9001 Company. He is a long-time
attendee and participant in CSPIN. He has been involved in or managing process
improvement and metrics work in two different companies for about 7 years.
